Key West - Neat looking Navy boats

The view of Fleetwing from the dock across the fairway. Note the absence of any finger docks.

We got out and walked around for the first time in almost a month. We have a new harness for Hoolie that is really a life vest but it has a handle on top that I can use to move Hoolie to and from Fleetwing. It’s like handling a sack of potatoes but it’s effective and less of a strain on my back than picking him up.

Well, he seems very relaxed. Strange looking boats.

Today was mostly a recovery day which was easy to do. I went over to the office to pick up some ice and there were two naval quick boats taking on fuel. They were painted an impressive dark gray with some digital camouflage. The crew was relaxing in the sun but the boats looked menacing.

What are the aft ramps for? A place for a boat going faster to return to the mother ship?

The aft end of the boats had a ramp that sloped down to the waterline. Could it be used as a boarding platform for a smaller boat? I’ve seen these boats on the ICW, speeding along as they passed by.

We’ve been at this dock for such a long time that we know all the regulars. Dennis, who runs a sailboat charter operation is once again back but Captain Albert has left. We heard that he sold his fleet and is out on a mooring. Times change but Key West still looks the same.

US NAVY Special Boat Unit (SBU) craft...the ramp allows Combat River Raiding Craft (CRRCs - semi rigid inflatables) to slide down, or run up onto the boat. SBUs perform brown water security, and support the insertion and extraction of SEAL units.
