Titusville - Osprey nests

This nest is on top of a power line pole, look pretty sturdy

A common sight in Florida are osprey nests atop power line poles and light poles. There is evidently a state effort in mounting round metal brackets on top of poles to attract ospreys The nests are built and the ospreys have their young. You can see them all over this time of the year.

You can just see the row of high powered lights below the nest. Now it overlooks
 A dirt bike park

The top photo is a nest on a power line pole. I remember one year when the fixture that holds the nest was damaged by a storm. The ospreys still came and built their nest as best they could farther down in between the power line structure. It wasn’t much of a nest but I guess the ospreys were used to the location and just had to come back.

The bottom photo is a nest on top of a light pole at what used to be a ballpark - now converted to a dirt bike area. The beautiful ballpark was bulldozed up to make mounds of dirt for bikers to motor around and up and over. In all the time we’ve been around Titusville, we’ve never seen a biker of any type using the facilities. I guess baseball fell out of favor and the town fathers thought having a dirt bike park would be better. It really was a beautiful ballpark, complete with a fence, nighttime lighting, dugouts for each team, batting netting behind home plate, a smooth dirt infield, and a grassy outfield. Oh well, times change. At least the ospreys use the poles supporting the lights for nests.
