As high as he can get, looking for dinner |
The state of Florida has provided multiple nests for ospreys. The top of many power line poles has a circular ring of steel with sides that evidently provide an ideal place for osprey nests. Many of the markers along the ICW also have the same place for a nest on top. Titusville is no different. Many of the poles in the area are home to ospreys and they frequent the harbor for dinner. We often see an osprey with a fish in its beak headed back to its nest,
How would you like to spend all day up there? |
As you can see in the photo, the nests are at the very top of power line poles fully exposed to the weather of Florida. It gets the summer hot sun, the thunderstorms with high winds, etc. Evidently, it doesn't bother them, they seem to thrive. It just seems they would bake in the full summer sun.
The local osprey will fly from his perch at his nest to the top of one of the masts in the harbor (not ours!) and peer down from his lofty height to spot a fish for dinner. Then comes a dive and usually a catch with the fish still wiggling. The climate his certainly suits them.
