Key West - Wind drops below 40 kts, time for a sail

The anchorage outside Key West is wide open to the north
Finally the wind abated but then it died. There's a popular saying in Long Island Sound, "It has average wnds of 15 kts". That means that it's either blowing 30 kts or 0 kts which averages out to 15 kts. Today in Key West was a 0 kt day (actualy about 5 kts) so if it's averaged with yesterday's winds it would be 15 to 20 kts, not bad for sailing. Regardless, we all went out for a look around from the point of view of a boat in Key West and had lunch at anchor off Sunset Key.

To make matters worse, speedboats fly these guys around all day in the same area
Today is Carrie and Mike's last day, a sad time. They have to return to Pennsylvania with snow and ice, we'll stay down here. On the other hand, Philip and family arrive Tuesday, leaving a major winter storm back in Connecticut. Unfortunately, Key West is about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than normal for this time of the year. The high Tuesday is only 65 compared to a normal high of 75 but then again it's a lot warmer than Connecticut!

Rowan receives his morning hug from Caroline
I received news from John Kwak that he's decided to unstep his mask and take the Okeechobee Canal across the middle of Florida instead of trying to wait for weather and dodge storms down through the Keys. We would have liked to see John in Key West but I think it's the best decision, the weather this year has just been terrible and there's no improvement on the horizon. We'll wait it out, it can't last forever?!
