Pungo River - at anchor

Heaven on Earth for Hoolie, a sandy beach
Today was another good day for making time going south. The winds were 10 to 15 on the nose but in the river the waves weren't bad. At the Alligator River Marina, we escaped the fuzzybills and their green slime. They were around but nothing like last year. For those who have followed my blog in the past, fuzzybills look like mosquitoes but they don't bite. Actually they are worse since they leave a green slime that is very hard to clean off over everything. It looks like a very poor paint job. They are prevalent on both sides of the Albemarle Sound, not so much north or south of there. They are the reason we go to a marina in this area instead of anchoring out. The bright lights of the marina attract them away from our boat.

We are now in an anchorage just at the end of the Alligator River canal, on the south end. The holding as always is in thick mud, excellent - there's no chance of dragging. There's only one other boat here so we're mostly alone. We have a convenient beach for Hoolie and this time of the year, there's no mosquitoes either but there are flies, we've  been swatting all day.

Peaceful, quiet, scenic
We plan on leaving for Washington, NC Sunday morning and will arrive around 3:00 or so. We will be visiting Don and Liz Bunch who were long term members of the Poughkeepsie YC where we met them. We'll rest for a few days there before heading south again.
